LATEST UPDATE - 15th MAY 14.00

We are pleased to report that two of the club's four outdoor courts will be available for play from tomorrow morning, Saturday 16th May. The other two courts should be available next week.

All members will be receiving an e-mail later today with information on the new Covid-19 guidelines and instructions on how to book a court.

Please do not turn up to play unless you have booked a court.

LATEST UPDATE - 12th MAY 19.00

As expected the LTA issued earlier today their guidance for tennis venues regarding a return to restricted play.

The document contains 5 pages and members of the club commitee met again this afternoon to go through the guidelines and recommendations line by line. The first piece of advice is - 'Venues are advised to take time to ensure they reopen safely, rather than rushing'.

There is much work to be done -

  • to prepare the courts
  • to ensure that the club meets the guidelines
  • and most importantly to ensure that the club is safe for players and the volunteers who have to maintain our facility

We are still hoping to re-open on Saturday with two courts but it can't be guaranteed at this time. The other two courts will be ready about a week later. To book a court members will have to use the online booking system on the website. The booking system will become active when we have a confirmed start date.

The good news is that Jamie will be able to return to work although this will be individual lessons only. He is also hoping to start on Saturday so please call Jamie on 07971 670017 to book a lesson.

Finally please read the LTA's guidelines for players by clicking this link.

LATEST UPDATE  11th MAY, 2020   17.00

Members of the Club committee met today on a video call to discuss the re-opening of the outside tennis courts at the Club The LTA have issued another update which includes the following advice for clubs:

England - Return to Restricted Play

"Following further clarifications we have received from Government, tennis activity in England will be able to take place outdoors from Wednesday with singles play only, other than where players are all from the same household in which case they can play doubles.

We are finalising full guidance for players, coaches and venues and aim to share this as soon as possible via this page."

We at Blackburn Northern are expecting further guidelines to be issued tomorrow by the LTA and we have another meeting planned for tomorrow afternoon.   We will then be making a full assessment of the guidelines and how our facilities and booking system can be adapted to facilitate a safe playing environment.

As a result we are "planning" to have the outdoor tennis courts available to members from Saturday 16th May.   It will not be possible at this stage to re-open the indoor tennis and squash courts.

We will issue a full update on how the new system will operate in the next few days.

Please click this link to view government website (Section 1.1 relates to the playing of tennis).

Following the prime minister's announcement of yesterday the LTA have issued the following statement.

'We are continuing to work with Government on the relevant clarifications required to ensure further advice is provided to the tennis community as soon as possible and in advance of Wednesday (13 May), when tennis will be playable in England between members of the same household.'

England Squash have not issued a statement to date.

Members of the club committee have a video call planned for later today to discuss the new guidelines which we hope will be available by then.

All club facilities are closed until further notice.

Following the latest government announcements all parts of the club will close at 5.30 pm today (Saturday 21st March).

We will be refunding court fees to anyone who has a booking for Sunday onwards.

Please click links below for LTA and England Squash advice to clubs.

You will see that the LTA are advising that some venues may be able continue to allow tennis to be played and even encouraged. We will need, however, to make a full assessment of the guidelines and how our facilities and booking system can be adapted to facilitate a safe playing environment.

We are intending to carry out this assessment before the end of the month.
