Covid-19 Tier 3 Restrictions

As you will be aware Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen have been placed in Tier 3 under the new restrictions. These restrictions affect the club as follows:

Permitted Hockey activity:

  • Training can resume from December 2nd.

Permitted Tennis activity:

Outdoor:

  • Singles and doubles play can continue as normal.

Indoor:

  • Singles and doubles play is ONLY allowed for adults of the same household/bubble.
  • 1 to 1 adult coaching/people in the same household/bubble is allowed.
  • Junior coaching can continue: group and individual.
  • Tennis for disabled people is allowed.

Permitted Squash activity:

  • Single player – solo practices.
  • Same household/support bubble – full squash game
  • Squash for disabled people can continue.
  • Junior squash can continue.

The new restrictions will continue to have a major impact on court usage of the dome and squash courts. Unfortunately we have had no alternative but to continue with a timetable limiting when courts are available for booking. The timetable will take effect from Wednesday 2nd December, with court booking sheets being available from  6pm on Tuesday 1st December.

Due to personal circumstances Ian Broughton is temporarily stepping down from involvement with club duties, including the indoor court booking system. If you have any queries re court bookings, please contact Nindi on 07941 380421.

Clubhouse:

  • Apart from providing toilet facilities for those using the tennis and squash courts, the clubhouse is closed.

We know you will be very disappointed, as we are, with these playing restrictions, but, we trust we can rely on your support in abiding by them. Hopefully they will not be in place for too long.

Take care,

Blackburn Northern Management Committee

4th November, 2020   -   Lockdown 2 Update

The impact of the lockdown, from November 5th, on the club playing facilities is as follows:

Hockey:

Hockey is suspended until after December 4th at the earliest.

Squash:

The squash courts are closed until further notice.

Outdoor Tennis:

The LTA has confirmed that the new restrictions mean that tennis activity in England is not permitted for the duration of the national lockdown, as all outdoor and indoor tennis facilities have to be closed.

The LTA focus will now switch to campaigning to ensure that as much grassroot tennis activity as possible, can resume, as soon as possible, including both indoor and outdoor tennis. In particular, the LTA is calling on the Government to look again at the restrictions on using indoor courts when this national lockdown is eased. Something we know members will be pleased to hear.

Therefore from November 5th onwards, Blackburn Northern will be closed, but, hopefully, we will all be able to get back onto the courts and pitches again at the beginning of December.

Take care,

Blackburn Northern Management Committee

To all members,

 Covid-19  Tier 3  Restrictions

As you will be aware Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen have moved into Tier 3, but gyms and leisure centres are allowed to stay open.

We have been seeking further clarification as to what this means for the club. It would appear that under this new legislation, “ the Government has defined racket sports as being activity that involves mixing because they require at least 2 people for it to happen, despite, in the case of tennis, them being on opposite sides of the net”. Therefore the Tier 3 restrictions for the club are as follows:

Permitted tennis activity:

  • Singles and doubles play outdoors can continue as normal.
  • Junior coaching can continue indoors.
  • 1 to 1 adult coaching/ people in the same household/support bubble can continue indoors.
  • Tennis for disabled people can continue indoors.
  • Adults in the same household/support bubble can continue to play indoors

The LTA are continuing to argue the case to the Government that tennis is a naturally social distanced sport that can be played safely indoors.

Permitted squash activity:

  • Single player – solo practices.
  • Same household/support bubble – full squash game.
  • Squash for disabled people can continue.
  • Junior squash can continue.

As you will be aware these new restrictions will have a major impact on court usage of the dome and squash courts. Therefore we have had no alternative but to set up a new timetable for when the indoor tennis courts are available for booking. This timetable will take effect from:  Wednesday 21st October.                                                      Any  existing bookings after that date are automatically cancelled and monies will be returned. As soon as restrictions are lifted the indoor courts will open as normal and all block bookings will be re-instated.

Clubhouse:

The clubhouse will remain open to provide toilet facilities for those using the tennis and squash courts. With respect to usage of the members lounge, please remember  that  current restrictions state that you must not sit with anyone indoors unless they are from your own household/support bubble. You can however sit outside, on the patio, as long as not in groups of more than 6.

Please keep an eye on your emails for further updates as the situation with regards to what play is allowed may change rapidly.

These are unprecedented times, and, as a committee, we are being faced with difficult decisions, often without much detailed guidance. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the members for all the support you have given the club this year. We know you will be very disappointed with these new playing restrictions, but, we trust we can rely on your support in following them.

LATEST UPDATE  6th September, 2020

The indoor tennis courts will open on Tuesday, 8th September, initially for members and players with regular or block bookings.

The squash courts will open on Friday 11th September and we will soon announce the detail of the procedures we are implementing to ensure they are ‘Covid-safe’.

UPDATE  25th August, 2020

As you are probably aware the Government announced last Friday further lockdown restrictions for eight wards in Blackburn.     These are Audley & Queens Park, Bastwell & Daisyfield, Billinge & Beardwood,  Blackburn Central, Little Harwood & Whitebirk, Roe Lee, Shear Brow & Corporation Park and Wensley Fold. The club is situated in the Roe Lee ward.

The new rules are somewhat vague and open to interpretation and to date there has been no official guidance from the LTA. Club officials have studied the changes and have interpreted them as follows:-

  • The outdoor tennis courts can remain open
  • Members who live in any of the 8 wards can still play tennis with members of different households providing 2m social distancing is upheld.
  • Nothing has changed for members who live in the other wards in the town or outside the borough.

Since our last update the LTA have issued revised guidelines for players and venues. Please note the new advice for doing a pre-attendance symptom check before you visit the club.

PRE-ATTENDANCE SYMPTOM CHECK

  • Anyone attending a venue (including players, coaches, staff and any other visitors), should undergo a pre-attendance self-assessment for any COVID19 symptoms using the information on the NHS website before leaving home.
  • No-one should leave home to participate in tennis if they, or someone they live with, has symptoms of COVID -19, currently recognised as any of the following: - A high temperature - A new, continuous cough - A loss of, or change to, their sense of smell or taste
  • Should an individual have demonstrated any such symptoms, they must follow NHS and PHE guidance on self-isolation

Indoor Tennis and Squash

Sadly our indoor facilities must remain closed.   The government are reviewing the local lockdown restrictions every Friday so please check your e-mails and our website every week for any change.    The continued closure of indoor sports and gyms is peculiar to Blackburn and Bradford even though there are other areas where indoor facilities are open despite being on local lockdown and having higher infection rates. We have written to our MP and local councillors about this anomaly.

We are ready to open our indoor tennis and squash courts as soon as the restrictions are lifted.

Finally a big thank you to all our members for your continued support during this difficult time.

Blackburn Northern Committee
